Dorothy Counts was one of first four black students to integrate North Carolina public schools in 1957. Photographers and reporters recorded the harassment and the violence that erupted on her first day of school. After three more days, for safety reasons, she was forced to drop out of Harding High School and move to Pennsylvania.
It’s hard not to cry upon seeing this.
I always wonder, do the hideous white people in these pictures jeering and pulling faces and being completely and utterly inhumane look at themselves now and think, ‘How could I have done that?’ and ‘Who is that person?’ and ‘I’m really, really ashamed and sorry for what I did.’
I have to hope so, but I really doubt that they think anything other than ‘I really wish I wasn’t in that picture.’
I hope Dorothy Counts lives and lives well. Anyone who spit at or on her, threw rocks at her, cursed her: I wish you ill.

Make your voice known, just because someone disagrees with a position doesn’t mean they have the right to quit being American. It’s insanity, it’s economic, social, and political pandering to a dangerous part of our national identity and it is absolutely wrong.
