So Glenn Goes to Hotchkiss
As a graduate of a fine New England prep school, it was a great relief to see that Glenn was shipped off to a different one. Though Glenn strikes me more a Deerfield man. And he’s a lacrosse player? PERFECT.

Snobbery pt. 2
But what can I do? Pops worked like a demon, 80 hour weeks as a traveling salesman and engineer and got lucky with a start-up he helped build. Then he retired to Nantucket. It’s not like I’m retiring there any time soon. Or ever.

Snobbery?
I hope I didn’t just come off as a huge snob on teh facebook commenting on a friend’s trip to Nantucket. But I probably did. It might not be possible to avoid snobbery even saying/typing the word Nantucket. It’s like it requires a monocle to even pronounce.

The Pale King
Michael Pietsch deserves the Pulitzer. The Pale King is really accessible and interesting. Much more so than Oblivion, Infinite Jest, or Girl w/Curious Hair.

Useful/Useless Degrees and People
I have no use for useless people no matter their degree(s). I have three degrees in English literature, but I hope that I’m a useful person. Most days I think I am. I also took enough math and science courses for another Bachelor’s degree, but Emory didn’t (doesn’t?) award a pre-med degree like some schools did/do. And so what? Organic chemistry, calculus, and physics were...

becky-mi replied to your post: Baseball lagniappe Is it weird that I kind of hate hearing the Detroit feeds on XM, because the Blue Cross commercials are no longer Ernie Harwell extolling the virtues of walking? I would too.  I have a couple of his books, and heard him from time to time on Sox broadcasts when they would talk to him on NESN or on tWWL. What a treasure he was. And a proud Emory...

Baseball lagniappe
Listening to all these local baseball broadcasts via iPhone is also great because one hears all the local ads. I love the Farmer John sausage ads in SoCal, the car dealers that all sound the same, the local breweries in St. Paul and Seattle, and the crazy furniture people everywhere.

Baseball
Because of my newish phone, I’ve been listen to and watching a ton of baseball. I don’t really know why (other than it’s a great game), as the BoSox are headed for a losing season, but damn if the Mariners and Giants and Dodgers aren’t great to listen to on my late night drives. I want to get new caps too. An Ms hat for sure as Seattle is where I want to be. Maybe a...

Mark Schlereth's 2nd most anticipated NFL game...
thegodamill: That dude must not like football. What a fucking idiot. Like all ESPN trolls, Schlereth likes “stories,” especially easy ones. Somehow Tebow going against his hometown team, even though he’ll be on the bench for most of the game, is a “story.” ESPN ruins sports.

Athletes like Webber… Michigan AD David Brandon recently explained that one of our volleyball players actually “cost” the athletic department $400,000 when all was said and done because she was an engineer. He didn’t mind, but it’s something to ponder. Right. And I think the point is that basketball and football raise that money....

RE: That last re-blog of Mike's brilliant point
My pop started at MIT in 1960. He’s a bright fellow. And when he got there, MIT, like GA Tech and Cal Tech and RPI and all the other technical colleges, was being flooded with government money. You know, TO GO TO THE FREAKING MOON. We were talking about this the other weekend, about how exciting a time it was to go to a technical college and work with the guys who beat the Nazis (and he...

Ye Gods.
This new Soundgarden is fantastic. So glad they were able to bury the hatchet—looking at at your ginormous, but now deflated, ego Cornell—and get back to making heavy ass music. Can’t wait for them to tour the US. Maybe Matt Cameron will do double duty and play with both Soundgarden and Pearl Jam on the same bill. Of course, his arms might fall off.
