Year of Suck
Began the year teaching four classes for crap money while trying to be the good soldier and hoping for better. My back was slowly getting worse and worse with brief respites when the steroid injections worked, and it became clear that I was in for surgery.
Began unemployment in May. Going down the Department of Labor isn’t soul crushing at all. At all. So much so that they have you do it...

7.5 miles or so, 1:18
Not bad. Hilly trail course but made up for the last two days’ crap runs.
Nearly ready to tackle the whole trail. Perhaps on Sunday. Tomorrow I rest.

I could do this right now, no prep at all.
English - American literature. Teach the department’s offerings in American literature of the 19th and/or 20th centuries and in literary theory or film. Required: Ph.D. in English with specialization in American literature of the 19th or 20th centuries. Preferred: Some college teaching experience; subfield in literary theory or film.
I would rawk this job.
Looking at Jobs
There’s actually a really good one for me at Rhode Island College. Pros: tenure track, Providence, close to family. Cons: Doesn’t start until August, yet another hugely expensive move, what would J do?, they’ll get 1000 applicants.
In my TT job, we advertised for 4 open positions—any rank, any specialty—just like this job. We had 800 applicants in a much better year...

The Philadelphia Story is on TCM. Your argument is invalid.
Center Stage 2 is on Oxygen. Your argument is invalid.
Having not seen Center Stage 1, I couldn’t possibly jump into CS2 even though Philadelphia Story is over. There must be dozens of plot-lines I won’t understand.
I am no fan of NYE
I remember hearing from a college girl-friend that she was going to Times Sq. for NYE and couldn’t believe I didn’t want to go. I’ve been in NYC for St. Patrick’s, and that was quite enough.
The best NYE I ever had was with a friend from high school, a friend from college, and his father and his father’s partner. We played Taboo for hours and got absolutely hammered...

Crowd Sourcing: When to Tell?
The person who is my putative boss at [redacted] emailed yesterday to say my upcoming schedule is, again, reduced to one grad class that has one student in it, and she doesn’t know what this means for my contract status.
Really?—I cannot believe this crap—I turned down a FT gig here where we live for the promise of a much better gig 140 miles away—IN AUGUST.
Ordinarily, I...
So we started watching ‘The Big Sleep’ on Netflix streaming, but the connection was hinky. Kept searching. Anyway, neither one of us had seen it, and I loved it. Until … Mr. Flu kicked J in the teeth again. Poor thing.
Anyway, I looked into Faulkner’s time in Hollywood once in college, before ‘Barton Fink’ had come out if memory serves, and he was just...

Anybody seen Mother Abigail?
Wow is J sick with the flu. She fell out briefly this morning, so we spent 3 hours at Emergent Care to avoid the ER, as I assume we’d still be there. We argued whether she actually lost consciousness, but really, is that an argument the unconscious person can win?
I think it must be last year’s virus as I got a flu shot last year and she didn’t, and I’m fine.
I do feel...

Terrible beautiful run
One of those runs where the mind was willing but the flesh was weak. My outer calves can go suck eggs. Crap today. Just painful. I guess it’s part of the cycle of getting in shape along with eating and drinking too much since Saturday, but still. 5 miles of slogging.
OTOH, I saw a beautiful red-tailed hawk, a white heron flying right at me, and for the first time in my life, a wild river...

Worst Weather on Earth, now on Twitter
I’m kind of pulling back from Twitter, but I do enjoy the feed from @Mt__Washington. While the tallest mountain in New England, it’s dwarfed by the peaks of the Sierras and Rockies, but because of the way the surrounding notches are situated at a convex of 3 major weather systems, Mt. Washington routinely ‘enjoys’ the worst weather on Earth including some of the the highest...
The Flu is a Wicked Bitch
J is as sick as I’ve ever seen her. 103 temp this afternoon. I’m trying to keep her well hydrated, but I’m pretty helpless. I think I’m going to get some TamaFlu tomorrow to see if I can ward it off—my head is starting to hurt.
ndeddiemac asked: I saw your question to the ever great Jack on soccer songs/chants. I had the same one awhile ago as a new/growing soccer fan. A great website when it works is fanchants.com. However, it seems to be down right now. Hopefully that's just temporary as it has a ton and was very informative/amusing. Hope it comes back/helps.

I gave blood today in a new (to me) way.
Instead of taking the usual whole blood, I gave only red blood cells. They hooked me up to a machine with a centrifuge in it that spins out the RBCs and then it pumped my plasma and platelets back in. Awesome.
Apparently, being O+ means that my RBCs are especially needed. As wiki says,
Erythrocytapheresis is the separation of erythrocytes from whole blood. It is most commonly accomplished using...
So officially bored
becky-mi:
A month and a half without working. It was cool up through the holidays, but now I am losing my mind. I love to complain about working, but oh my god, I would rather suffer through 3 mind-numbing conference calls than one sneeze-inducing vacuuming session. SOMEONE PLEASE HIRE ME AHHHHHHHH.
Been bored since last May. Really bored. Can’t wait for next week as I officially start...

A) I loved the WTC
B) I love Petite. He’s insane.
C) in my wheelhouse. French documentary. Oui.
Brilliant, brilliant film in so many ways. It spoke such truth to the French character and let me feel okay about looking at the towers again for the first time. His whole message takes you to a better place.
I didn’t lose any friends on 9.11, but my aunt...

White Christmas? White Christmas.
Not much snow, but we have a slight accumulation here in the deeeeep south of Jawja. I believe it’s the first white Christmas on record here.
It’s a Festivus Miracle!
Christmas dashboard = best thing ever.

Cheers!

64 minute trail run
It was cold, but I did it to earn my breakfast.
It would choke a pig: 3 pieces bacon fried old school, steak tips, egg nog latte, 3 eggs, scrambled in bacon grease.
Now to mash 5# of potatoes for the next meal while heating up my meatballs.
No kids, so it's really quiet here. And cold.
I’m going for a run.
And then I will come home and have an eggnog latte, scrambled eggs, and bacon, and leftover stew meat not cooked in last night’s fondue. And bacon.
And then there will be meatballs and beer.
I think that’s how the sweet baby Jeebus would want it.
